14th September – More fun with Buffies, Hammonassett

Spent an awesome evening in the company of the  two Buff-breasts and a very confiding Pec. Amazing birds, totally unperturbed by our presence and at one point walking around me to get past!

Juv. Buff-breasted Sandpiper, Hammonasset, CT

Typically at this time of year, the fresh scaly upperparts with all the feathers the same generation indicate a juvenile. Adults are ultra-rare in fall – I’ve never seen one in North America – and so juvs are the de facto age class.

Paul Fusco, wondering why he mortgaged his house for an 800mm lens!
